Larry

Larry in the Neuromancer graphic novel. Art by Bruce Jensen.

A type of software. It has the form of angular slivers, of coloured silicon. They are entered into a carbon socket planted behind the left ear, which can load even a dozen spikes of microsoft. They are sold mounted under oblong transparent bubbles on squares of white cardboard.

They are a relatively new technology, not available during the time of the Big Scientists but they are used by the Panther Moderns (7 years later). The phrase "go silicon" probably refers to when someone makes extensive use of them.

Smith was one of the first persons the Finn knew who "went silicon"; he purchased art history programs and tables of gallery sales. These provided him with formidable knowledge of the art business compared to his colleagues.

Wearing one such glossy black microsoft, Larry could detect that Molly Millions was no "alone", as she broadcasted her sensorium via SimStim technology to Case. Molly commented that this sharp sensitivity must be costy.
