Roland is a French agent of the Turing Police.
Neuromancer[]
Investigating the movements of Wintermute, he, Michele and Pierre followed Armitage to Freeside and posed as tourists in the Intercontinental keeping close to his team.
They broke into Case's room, who entered his room in the morning. During the interrogation he played the Good Cop, countering Pierre's hostility, pretending to take Case's side, prividing some kindness, speaking slowly conveying reasonableness. He offered him a Gitane which he refused.
Roland pointed out that it is strange that Case claims that he was hired to make a run to an unknown target; as a hacker, after penetrating the defenses, should have knowledge in order to perform a required operation.
Case asked to put some clothes on; Roland asked Pierre, the "Bad Cop", to which he answered "Non"; Roland just shrugged to Case, who just smiled. Case said that he is sick and needs rest, without knowing any more than that. Roland nodded but asked for Kolodny to which Case claimed ignorance.
Michele told Case what they discovered about their movements. Roland said, almost apologetically, that it was easy to trace their movements in Istanbul, when their woman alienated Terzibashyan. Case questioned the Police's jurisdiction on Freeside, but Roland ensured him that they operate under treaties that grant them such flexibility. With those words, his eyes became as hard as Pierre's, having dropped his mask of amiability.
Case surrendered and they were crossing the meadow to their standby ship. Roland and Michele fell again into tourists character, chattering brightly in French. Michele jovially showed the view to Roland. They began crossing the bridge over Desiderata Street, and then a microlight, controlled by Wintermute, killed Pierre, and Michele fell down. Case started running with Roland after him. His face was fixed, white, his teeth bared, holding something (perhaps a weapon). Roland managed to reach a grove, and then a gardening robot fell out of the branches, and killed him.
