Turner is a mercenary security operative specializing in extraction of corporate defectors.
Initially a security detail for a Sense/Net SimStim crew, then he worked his way up through the freelance security industry until killed in South America. He was recruited by Conroy to participate in corporate extractions. His agent ensured good contracts that ensure his survival.
His credit chip was a black rectangle of reflective surface, with golden edges, making clerks smile to him as he hopped airports.
At the commencement of Count Zero he is in New Delhi, having rented a BMW, outside the Khush-Oil Hotel on Chandni Chauk. It was then when they sent a slamhound programmed to find his pheromones and hair color, and exploded at his car.
Thanks to his contract, most of his remains were salvaged to Palam International and to Singapore within an hour. During the 3 months it took to clone and reconstruct his body, his consciousness spent time in a ROM-generated SimStim construct; he was a boy in an idealized New England of the previous century, lusting for cheerleaders, reading Conan Doyle and enjoying Wheaties breakfast prepared by his mother. This dream was interrupted by the surgeon's visits, who opened a door to his mind to ask questions; he perceived them as nightmares. Meanwhile his skin was cloned and was given new green eyes and new genitals, and one morning he woke up, with the Dutchman telling him he is complete. Supplied and upgraded, he left Singapore for the next airport Hyatt.
As part of his rehabilitation he holidays in Mexico where he is involved with Allison, actually a Hosaka corporate psychologist assessing his fitness to return to the field.
He is picked up by Conroy and briefed for the extraction of Christopher Mitchell, a top level Maas Biotech engineer, to Hosaka.
An extraction point with medical, security and cyber assets is established in Arizona where Mitchell is supposed to escape to by ultralight aircraft. At the extraction point a medical team will ensure his health and then he would be transported by Turner to Bogota by combat jet.
The extraction is comprised and the ultralight crashes. Turner extracts the pilot, who turns out to be Mitchell's daughter Angie, rather than Mitchell himself. Turner takes Angie directly to the jet and goes to his family farm rather than Bogota, where his brother Rudy still lives with his companion Sally.
It is later revealed the extraction point is destroyed by a hyper-velocity rail gun, which is initially confused for a small nuclear detonation, and all other members of the extraction team are killed.
Turner's brother Rudy conducts some medical examinations on Angie and Turner engages in a relationship with Sally. Rudy's examination reveals biosoft in Angie's brain but its purpose is unclear. Turner and Angie head for the Sprawl where Turner has more assets he can leverage to work out what needs to be done. They are attacked along the way and in the aftermath of the confrontation it is revealed one of their attackers was part of Conroy's support team for the original extraction job, leading Turner to believe Conroy had double crossed him.
On their way to the Sprawl one of the voodoo gods (loa)/fractured AI of the net (identified as Legba - Lord of Roads) manifests through Angie and instructs Turner to take her to Jammer's nightclub in the Hypermart. Once in the sprawl another loa (Samedi - Lord of Graveyards/Death) manifests and gives Turner further instruction.
Once inside Jammer's nightclub Turner speaks with Conroy on the phone and it is revealed he did double-cross Turner, but was actually working for a man named Virek who wanted Christopher Mitchell for his own reasons. Conroy reveals that he orchestrated the destruction of the extraction site and team to make both Maas and Hosaka think Mitchell was dead and allow Conroy to deliver him to Virek. After extraction Conroy had tracked the jet to Turner's family farm and had killed Rudy, but did not find Sally, and discovered that Angie had been extracted.
Turner instructs Bobby "The Count" to communicate with Jaylene Slide on the net that Conroy was responsible for the death of her partner Ramirez who was a member of the obliterated extraction team. Jaylene Slide subsequently eliminates Conroy.
After events at Jammer's nightclub are resolved Turner leaves Angie with Bobby and Beauvoir to go to the Sprawl and learn more about her ability to communicate with the loa.
At the conclusion on Count Zero Turner has returned to his old family farm and married his brother Rudy's companion Sally and is living with his son.
